Hamburger

Self Critique on Hamburger

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this assignment but there a few things that I would have redone a bit better. A shot list was made but we didn't stick to it as much as we probably should have. Getting some of our scenes shot from more angles would have helped greatly in being able to shorten the film by cutting some scenes a bit shorter. Being able to cut on action is something I'm always trying to do but from some of the shots but unfortunatly we (or maybe just I) didn't direct our talent as well as we could have and for some scenes they moved from a still position to doing that scene and it didn't work as well as I would have liked in the edit.

Overall, more time spent on preparation would have definitely helped when it came to the edit. There are quite a few rough cuts and problems with sound (the rain over the past 2 weeks have been killer on the audio quality) but there are also many cuts and scenes that I am very proud of.

This whole plot started off about a joke about searching for a mysterious brownie and while still somewhat of a joke (she IS doing all this to find a hamburger) it developed a lot father and better than either Nick or myself could have imagined!

Overall, sound...not as great as it could be. There are many cuts that I would have liked to have been done better and there are a few experimental things that we did that for 'dramatic effect' that we are going to get feedback on during critique today so we'll get to see how that works out and that pretty much sums it all up.

Reading of the script with visual aid

Highly Entertaining

Production Design Statement

The aesthetic use of transitions will not only move the story along further but will also create visually pleasing moments. Many of the outdoors shots will mainly consist of pathways or passages which will show progression and the other transitions will be initiated by the opening of a door.

Plot breakdown (for Hamburger)

The plot breakdown is fairly simple, the girl goes into the cabinet, where she meets up with four other characters in different situations, each involving (besides the last) a test of skill and determination. Upon confronting the last character the girl ends up waking up on her kitchen floor and once realizing she did not gain the hamburger that she had sought after she leaves in frustration. But then a hand reaches from the cabinet and puts the hamburger back in it's original place.

Explanation of Theme and Intent

In this film we are main intent is to amuse and entertain our audience with an absurd story that leaves the viewer asking questions about what they have just seen. Then coupling the absurdity with well shot, well edited, experimental sequences to draw in our audience. So in short by experimentation and absurdity we create interest. This is a narrative piece structured in a video game like sequence inspired by the short experimental films by Maya Deren.

Our main themes are obsession and absurdity.

Obsession because of the extreme lengths that the main character will go to just to retrieve a simple hamburger that could easily be replaced.

Absurdity because not only is the situation, the dialogue and the characters absurd but so is the determination to get just a hamburger.

Single Sentence Description

A girl ventures into an alternate dimension, going through a series of battles, in search of her one true desire - COW MEAT!

Pitch for HAMBURGER

The scene will open with a woman walking into a kitchen with a McDonalds bag. She takes a hamburger from the bag and places both the bag and the hamburger on the kitchen counter. She goes to the fridge to get a drink and when she closes the fridge door she sees that the hamburger is now gone. She looks around the area looking for the hamburger but can’t find it anywhere. She then notices a light shining from a cupboard under where she left the hamburger. She opens it and looks inside and sees an ally way. She crawls through the cupboard and finds herself crawling out of a box into an alley way.

Looking back and forth down the alley way, she sees someone having a conversation with someone not there. She approaches this person and asks them where they are. The person responds with ‘here, where else would we be?’ Still trying to find out where she is she asks until this mysterious person calls her crazy. Becoming frustrated, she asks one more time. The man then becomes angry, and he then challenges her to a battle! (of rock paper scissors.) She accepts this challenge and wins. Her now defeated opponent falls and screams dramatically before turning into a box. She looks into the box and sees endless darkness. She crawls into the box and then finds herself crawling out of a box that exits into a forest.

Now feeling very confused she looks around. A very posh looking gentleman approaches her and asks her if she needs any help as she looks very lost. She responds with a yes and mentions that she can’t find her hamburger. The gentleman, not knowing what a hamburger is, tells her that maybe the ‘master’ will know. She asks where she might find this master to which the gentleman dramatically responds ‘by defeating me!’ He moves his hand and leaves blow in that direction leading up to a table with chess set up. They start playing chess (very dramatically) and when our main character plays checkmate the gentleman lets out a dramatic cry and crumbles to the ground before turning into a box. She once again crawls through this box, which leads her to a lounge type room.

She calls out hello in this room to see if anyone is there. A man comes from behind a couch (walking like he was walking up stairs) and makes his presence known. She turns around and asks him if he is the master and if he’s seen her hamburger. She begins explaining her reason for her search and when he asks about what a hamburger is she explains that it’s cow meat. He becomes appalled that she would ever eat another animal and challenges her to a battle to which she once again accepts. They start getting ready as if they were going to do a very dramatic war like physical battle, applying war paint to their faces and putting bandages on their arms etc. Then they appear standing in front of an air hockey table and begin playing (very dramatically). The winning shot is made and the woman once again finds herself the victor with the loser having turned into a box. She crawls through the box and then find that she can’t crawl through the back and ends up breaking out the back of it.

She crawls out the other end in the same room and is now very confused. She looks around the room and sees another door, which she walks through. This leads to an abandoned attic type room with a long table in the center. At the end of the table she sees herself taking the last bite of a hamburger. She first questions why this person looks like her and then accuses her of stealing her hamburger. This person responds saying she doesn’t know what she’s talking about and she should just get her own. The copy stands up and then they both approach each other meeting in the middle of the table. Then the woman lifts a sword from behind her back and makes a move to strike her doppelganger in the head but right before it hits everything goes black.

She wakes up back in the kitchen and makes a move to rub her head in pain. She notices that the hand she was rubbing with has an crushed empty hamburger wrapper in it and she curses about ‘her’ having gotten it before her. She stands up and storms out of the kitchen, very upset. As she leaves a hand comes out of the cupboard she had crawled into in the beginning and places a hamburger with one bite taken out of it on the counter where it was previously. We zoom in on the hamburger and as you hear the closing of the cupboard the scene cuts to black.

THE END!

Pitch: ColorBlind Documentary

ColorBlind Documentary

Quick summary: This will be a documentary on the beginning and the evolution of the garage band ColorBlind.

Pitch: The film will be a series of interviews of the various band members of ColorBlind, with snippets of the band practicing and joking around throughout. What we want to portray is sense of friendship among the band members, accented by their music. The film will culminate in a performance by the band, followed by the question, "So where do you hope the band will go rom here?"

Motivation: Our main focus on this piece will be three-fold: to illustrate the camaraderie between band members, to show the bands progression, and to bring awareness to the viewer on how a typical garage band functions and gets it's feet on the ground.

Stephanie Black
Project #4
Oral Fixation - March 30, 2011

Someone (Katy) is going through a box of things, apparently random objects, and picks up a lollipop stick. Scene changes to a classroom setting where Katy meets Amanda after getting a lollipop from her that came directly from her mouth. Scene changes to Katy and Amanda sitting down eating lunch. katy drops her fork and Amanda gives her hers to use instead. As they walk off to throw their garbage away Katy pockets the fork while being watched by someone. Scene cuts to Amanda drinking water when Katy walks into the kitchen. Amanda walks away and leaves her glass behind which Katy promptly drinks from until a new roommate walks in. Katy is in her room and hears a door open. Amanda has just left the bathroom and Katy, once she sees that no one is watching, goes into the bathroom behind her. Once in the bathroom Katy more or less molests Amanda's toothbrush while the new roommate approaches the bathroom. She pockets the toothbrush and leaves the bathroom, running to the new roommate on the way. Katy is not back in her room holding a toothbrush. She puts it into the box and closes it before stacking it on top of 2 other similar boxes. She picks them us and walks outside. Katy is about to throw away the boxes until she sees Amanda going through one of the boxes she had left on the ground. Amanda then say 'I never said stop' which leads to a series of flashback of the scenes shown earlier revealing that Amanda knew and if anything encourages Katy's stalker like behavior. The final scene is of when Katy and Amanda first met and you see Amanda watching Katy before she entered the room and then pulling out 6 lollipops, showing that there was really no need for Katy to take the lollipop that came directly from her mouth.

This film is supposed to make you curious as to how the whole situation started and what it will lead up to. There is supposed to be a bit of comedic relief at the fact that the stalker feels as though she's being watched by this new roommate when it is actually her best friend that is watching her and indirectly but purposefully encouraging her to stalk her best friend. Overall the film is about temptation. The temptation of wanting attention for yourself and the temptation of doing something you know is wrong but you still find hard to give up.

I feel as though my main problem areas are probably my sound editing and quite a few os my cuts are rather clumsy looking. I still need to improve on how i pan seeing as how I do like to use it a lot but cannot quite get it right each time.

Breakdown the Script

The theme is temptation. Katy has been stalking her best friend, Amanda for a couple of months now. She has collected objects that belong to her and stores them all in boxes. Afraid of being found out by one of her roommates she decides to get rid of her collection. She goes through the box for a final time and has multiple flash backs starting from when Katy and Amanda just met to the first time Katy stole Amanda's toothbrush. While down by the garbage disposal Amanda sees Katy and starts going through the boxes. As Katy stands in shock Amanda looks at her and says she never wanted her to stop (meaning stop the stalking) Then you go back through all the flash backs that you had previously seen and see that Amanda knew exactly what was happening and watched while it happened. The last scene is of when Amanda and Katy first met and you see that Amanda somewhat made the relationship happen the way it did.

Stalker Script #2

Amanda
Katy
3-4 Extras

Katy is sitting her room on the floor going through some boxes full of miscellaneous objects. These consist of toothbrushes, lip balm, straws, random pieces of cutlery, lollipop sticks, what looks like chewed gum, pictures etc.

She sighs as she picks up one of the lollipop sticks

Scene Change

Katy is sitting at a desk in a classroom looking at the people around her. The people in the classroom and talking to each other, going through notebooks, looking at their laptop screens and doing other random things. She focuses on the people doing something with their mouths. She stares at the mouths of people talking, those chewing gum, those having a late breakfast before class starts. She notices someone sitting down in the seat next to her and turns to face this person (Amanda), has a lollipop in their mouth. Amanda looks at her and makes eye contact.

A: Hi, morning (she says with a smile)

K: Morning (she mumbles)

Katy looks forward and then glances back at Amanda

K: Do you have any more of those? (she points towards the lollipop in her mouth)

A: uh huh

Amanda goes into her hoodie pocket and takes out an apple flavor lollipop and hands it to Katy. Katy looks at it and grimaces a bit. Amanda makes a questioning face.

K: Allergic to apples (she says with a half smile)

Amanda makes a thinking face before talking

A: How about grape?

K: Grape’s good

Amanda takes the lollipop out of her mouth and hands it to Katy. Katy looks at it for a bit before taking it and putting it in her mouth. She holds out her hand to Amanda just as Amanda puts the apple-flavored lollipop in her mouth.

K: Katy

Amanda looks down at the hand and smiles before grasping it.

A: Amanda, nice to meet you.

Scene Change

Amanda and Katy are sitting outside having lunch. They are talking while eating. Katy drops her fork on the ground. Katy sighs before picking it up and putting it to one side. Amanda, who just put a stick of gum in her mouth, reaches for her fork from her finished plate of food and hands it to Katy. Katy accepts it and continues eating. Once they finish and walk off Katy pockets the used fork before they throw away their trash in a nearby garbage bin. As she does this someone that was sitting nearby glances at Katy.

Scene Change

Amanda is standing in a kitchen drinking a cup of water. There are a couple of boxes on the ground with labels like ‘clothes’, ‘school stuff’, ‘winter clothes’ and ‘random shit’ written on the sides and top. Amanda and Katy are moving into a dorm together. Katy walks into the dorm as Amanda finishes the cup of water and puts it in the sink. Katy goes through the cupboards in the kitchen until Amanda walks out of sight. She then reaches for the cups Amanda just used, fills it with water. She looks at it carefully and then drinks from it while looking around. One of the other roommates step out of their room Katy jumps as soon as she sees them. She drops the cup (still half full with water) into the sink and walks away while her roommate looks at her.

Scene Change

Amanda and Katy are walking down a hallway. Amanda just finished a popsicle and throws the stick a garbage as they walk. They walk a bit further down and then Katy pretends that she forgot something.

K: Oh damn! I’ll be right back, okay?

A: Yea, sure. Don’t be late.

Katy walks back down the hallway to the garbage. She looks behind her and sees Amanda’s back disappear through a doorway. She looks around to make sure no one is watching her. She then reaches into the garbage, pulls out the popsicle stick and pockets it. She turns around to go back to the classroom. As she walks back down the hallways she notices someone around a corner looking at the strangely. She looks back at this person and then realizes that they probably saw her. Eyes wide in shock and fright, she rushes back to the classroom.

Scene Change

Katy is in her room looking at a plastic bag in her hands. She waits until she hears a door close outside before peaking outside her room. She looks back and forth down the small hallways outside her bedroom. She then steps out of room with the plastic bag and into the bathroom across the hall, closing the door behind her and locking it. She opens the bag and takes out a brand new toothbrush that she removes from the packaging. This toothbrush is the same as the one in the toothbrush holder beside the sink. She takes the toothbrush out of the holder, sticks it in her pocket and replaces it with the new one. She looks at her reflection in the mirror, it’s slightly covered in fog, and then walks out of the bathroom and back into her room. As she leaves the bathroom her roommate steps into it, closing the door behind her.

Scene Change

Katy is still looking through her collection of objects, she holds up a collection of toothbrushes and then puts them back down. She looks at a bundle of lip balms, picks up one and uses it and then puts it back in its place. Sighing again she closes the box she was going through and stacks it up with 2 other boxes and carries them to the garbage outside the dorm.

Scene Change (outside the dorm by the garbage)

Katy puts down the stack of boxes and grabs the one at the top and opens the top of the garbage to dump it. She notices someone approaching her from behind and stooping down by the 2 remaining boxes. She turns around suddenly, dropping the box in her hands. Beside her, going through the boxes is Amanda. Amanda looks up at Katy while Katy slowly backs away from her until she is against the garbage container.

A: I never said I minded (she says with a smirk)

Katy’s eyes open wide and her breath hitches.

Scene Change

Amanda is standing in her room, a towel wrapped around her body with the door slightly open, she is barely visible when Katy opens the bathroom door and goes into her room, the toothbrush sticking slightly out of her pocket, as her other roommate enters the bathroom she closes her door with a knowing smiling on her face.

Scene Change

Amanda walks into the classroom until she knows she can’t be seen from outside, waits for 2 seconds and then peeks her head out the doorway to see Katy reaching into the garbage container. She stands up straight and walks to her seat, sitting and then smiling when she sees Katy walk into the room.

Scene Change

Amanda waits until she hears the front door opening before finishing the cup of water in her hand and putting it in the sink. She walks off, down the hallway of her dorm before backtracking a bit to see Katy drinking form the cup she had just discarded. Smiling, she walks into her room, closing the door behind her.

Scene Change

As Amanda and Katy walk towards the garbage to throw away their garbage Amanda watches as Katy puts the fork in her pocket ‘discretely’. She stares at it as Katy throws away her garbage as it is sticking out her pocket slightly.

Scene Change

Katy is sitting in the classroom, looking at people’s mouths, and watching someone eat breakfast. Amanda, who is standing in the doorway takes out a lollipop, and puts it in her mouth. She watches Katy for couple of seconds before walking into the classroom and sitting beside her and smiling in her direction as she makes eye contact. Fingering the apple-flavored lollipop in her pocket with one hand as she looks at Katy and says;

A: Hi, morning

Ash walks up towards house.

-Scene Change-

Ash walks into her room and puts her bag on her bed. She pulls out some things (including a text book) and outs them on a desk. She opens a draw that’s full of random items, hair clips, hairbrushes, short notes, old jewelry, many pens and pencils, a few small notebooks etc. She picks up the book and puts it in the drawer. While doing this the name on the front of the book is visible and you see ‘Ashley Hudson, History’ written on it in bold letters. When the book is being placed in the drawer there will be a close-up of the drawer and you can see all the notebooks have ‘Ashley’ written on the front and all the notes are the same handwriting.

Midterm Assignment Idea.

So far I have a general idea of how this will happen but no details are set at all!
The idea is that rather then the film moving forward in time I'll be pulling a page from what I remember of Memento's (directed by: Christopher Nolan) way of revealing information and starting with the end of the situation and working back to the beginning.

Theres is not going to be any character death although it may be insinuated that the main character dies. Not enough information will be given for that to be made clear. Every time someone looks at a clock or a watch or anything in general that can tell time the scene will move backwards to whatever happened earlier.

This whole situation will begin with someone (the main character) getting a package and it triggering this chain of events.

What exactly this chain of events will be I have yet to decide but I will be attempting to make this film as 'action packed' as I can.

With being able to move backwards and reveal unexpected information about a situation and completely change what is happening even though the end result will be used to my advantage (plot twists!).

Nothing is definite about the specifics in this movie but I believe by filming it this way I can add mystery and urgency to the situation as the watcher tries to figure out how everything came to the end conclusion without having all the information.

The Last Muffin

Self Critique/Write-up for Project #3

Project#3
The Last Muffin
February 23, 2011

P1 comes back from work while P2 is just waking up. They both make their way to the kitchen and go for the 'last muffin' which is left on the kitchen counter. Once they see each other they decide to fight/battle to win this muffin. While going through a series of ridiculous tasks P3 enters fro the back door, grabs the muffin and then walks off. Once P1 and P2 notice that the muffin is missing they team up and run after P3.

This film is meant to be a serious gag type film with all the tasks/challenges being done seriously. The intent is to over exaggerate a situation that most people have probably already been in; fighting to get the last something, whether it be the last slice of cake, pizza, pie and much more including non-food related items.

This idea came from thinking about how I could create an interesting situation without it really being all that interesting. I immediately thought of all the silly things my brother and myself would do to beat each other to get/win something.

Now that this piece is done I can't imagine it as anything besides being comedy, with the exaggerated facial expressions and actions and the way the actors kept on laughing at the hilarity of the situations I was asking them to act out I don't think it could be anything else.

The main tension is two tired people not in the best of moods 9one just waking up and the other coming back from work) fighting over something rathe petty but important to them at the time.

I realized after that many of my shots don't have avery smooth transition between them and there could have been some more preparing for the next shot as far as positioning and slowing down goes. Also, my lack of control over the tripod is still an issue I am working on. Because of this issue a few of my shots move when they should be steady. I am seriously trying to get this down though!

The Shining (response)

In the Shining many unconventional and difficult techniques are used when filming. The most common being tracking the main subject from behind which gives the viewer a sense of following the subject and seeing what they see. When a group of people are having a conversation and walking the camera will move in front of them while filming making it seem as though you are walking backwards while in front of this group of people. The camera also almost always follows a moving subject.

The use of zooming is also very prominent in this film; having a scene/shot of and object/person and then zooming out to reveal the location of this object/person is done very often. Seeing what the object/person is and having to wait until the camera zooms out to expose the surroundings or situation of the object/person creates a suspense in the film.

The camera shows a proper MS (showing waist upwards) even when subject is in an awkward position or bent in some way. Also the breaking of the 180˚ is very discreet. The switching from a WS to MS when breaking the rule made the transition very smooth. Keeping the difference between the two sides as being one the MS shots and the other having the WS shots makes the switch much less confusing than it would be otherwise.

The use of mirrors in the film is very creative. Using the mirror to film the actors instead of filming themselves and foreshadows the use of the mirror near the end of the movie.

Control over light is really good! No strange shadows on faces due to overhead lighting at any noticeable point in time. Very dramatic music creates tension throughout the whole movie whether something dramatic was about to happen or not. The sudden increase in loudness right before a title shot/screen (?) came up scared me each and every time even when I knew all that was going to happen was text on the screen.

Overall the use of interesting filming techniques to narrate this story made it very interesting and dramatic and even though I was very tired/terrified when watching it I didn't want to look away at any point in time (except for the end which was just plain terrifying!)

Write-up for 180 Rule Assignment

Stephanie Black
Project #2 (or #3...)
"The Antagonistic Roommate"
February 16, 2011

P1 forget's her keys and after ringing the doorbell and no one answering it she is forced to enter through the back door. She walk into the living room, past P2 (who has been sitting there the whole time) to put down her bag. She leaves the room and returns a few seconds later. P1 makes gestures to indicate to P2 that she would like to sit where her books are. She does this until P2 moves the books. After P1 sits she begins to point to where she left her bag, indicating for P2 to pass it to her. She repeatedly does this until P2 gives in and hands P1 the bag. P1 then takes out a book and gets comfortable as she begins to read while P2 tries to get as far away from P1 without getting off the couch.

The intent of this film was to create a situation where 2 people (roommates) don't get along but are almost forcibly put in the same space. One roommate forgets her keys and has to enter from the backdoor (which is left unlocked) to be able to enter the house. Throughout the film P1 (the person that forgot her keys) is asking P2 for favors while P2 would much rather ignore P1's existence.

The idea of this film came from personal experience of living in a dorm with seven other roommates and sometimes wanting to just be left alone for a bit but never being able to actually get peace.

After working through this piece the main theme became the tension between P1 and P2 caused by P2's ignoring of P1 and P1's invading of P2's space bubble.

The main problem areas are shots that could have been shortened while filming but not cut in the actual editing because the placement of the cut would seem awkward. More zooming in on faces could have been done so that a better view of facial expressions could have been seen but due to a certain person's (me) lack of ability to work a tripod and camera, controlling how the shots were taken (including angles and not finding the zooming function on the camera) became very difficult.

Digital Cinema (180˚ Rule Film)

I've decided to call this "The Antagonistic Roommate" because it sounds better than calling it Digital Cinema Assignment #3 or 180 Rule Film...

Concept

PERSON walk up to her house to open the door but then realizes she forgot her keys so she rings the doorbell.

From inside we see PERSON2 looking out the window besides the door but not making any move to open the door.

PERSON then walks to the backdoor and enters through there.

PERSON walks into the living room and sees PERSON2 sitting on the sofa on her laptop.

PERSON puts her bag beside the sofa while walking in front of PERSON2 who follows PERSON with her eyes as she moves.

PERSON then walks away and comes back with a cup of water.

PERSON stands beside the sofa and PERSON2 ignores her for a couple seconds.

PERSON2 then moves her books from the space beside her and PERSON sits down.

PERSON indicates for PERSON2 to pass her bag but she ignores her.

PERSON indicates again and PERSON2 reluctantly passes the bag.

PERSON finds a book in the bag and begins reading while PERSON2 scoots as far away from PERSON as possible.

-END-

The intention is to show someone coming home to a roommate that really doesn't like her and would rather ignore her presence.

Sense of Place (reworked)

I've managed to get the time cut in half, hopefully it doesn't look too choppy now.

'Sense of Place'

not meant to have sound!

Statement

A 'Sense of Place' can be quite obvious when referring to a person and how they feel about their surroundings, but as far as objects, it can be a bit more difficult to imagine what their 'happy place' is. If one where to imagine an object to have a mind capable of making decisions and having their own opinion then what would they think after a long stressful day? Would they be left in front of a sofa while their human's watched movies? Is that where they want to be, where they can rest and get a break?

By somewhat personifying the shoes you start to feel some kind of pity for them as they go through dangerous experiences on after the other. It becomes a summary of what a person might call a bad day and what a pair of shoes may call a nightmare.

Basing the shoes after myself I have made their 'happy place' or 'sense of place' their resting area which, in the shoes case is their shoe rack and in my case is my bed.

Sketch Book thinking and Definitions (the fun stuff)

WILL POST LATER, PROMISE =]

EDIT:
I don't think it's meant to be!

I've gone to almost all the scanners in the school and the program either isn't there, isn't functioning properly or takes 10 minutes to load (which I'm assuming means it also doesn't function properly).

Until I find a scanner that works here are pictures of my notes from my sketchbook
(let it not be said that I didn't try!)

This is pretty much as close as I got to making a story board. I've listed the different areas that I'll be filming in and what scenes I'll do in each area. Then I organized the order that each area appears in the film.

EDIT! (I've gotten the scanner to work so here's the notes/research in my sketchbook)
